Yangmei District, Taoyuan City｜古秀才客家海鮮館

My buddy discovered this supposedly popular restaurant out in the suburb of Taoyuan city. We even called ahead for reservation and preordered the main dish. Well, I had a rather interesting lunch experience. We arrived for an early Sunday lunch. The place was empty due to the early hour and we were told the Covid situation greatly affected their business I could empathize that. The restaurant’s theme is home-grown, homemade organic foods and it showed. Their signature dish “whole duck with fermented veggies” was absolutely delicious and something refreshing to me. Although on the salty side to my taste, I assume it’d be great to go with rice (I rarely eat rice, btw). All other dishes were tasty and fresh. Our only gripe was that we wanted to enjoy some seafood dishes but shrimps were not available at the time. Again we were told due to the Covid disruption. Ironic that the sign says Hakka Seafood Restaurant. Nonetheless we did have a freshly cooked steamed fish, yummy. Because we were the only table at the time, one of my buddies struck up a conversation with the owner. It turned out to be a long nonstop chat over all kinds of things, and many I barely understood (due to their different accents and mixing dialects, yeah I still have a long way to go as far as understanding Taiwan culture and life style). The owner is quite an character—hospitable, hyper friendly and talkative. They ended up exchanging contact info and I guess became friends. Food-wise, absolutely recommended and I’m sure my buddies will spread the word. Cheers.
