I've been to Taiwan over a dozen times and this quite possibly may have been the best family style meal I've ever had here. We ordered at least 10 dishes and all were excellent. Highlights included the fern salad, steamed whole fish, mini fried shrimp with fried scallions, Taiwanese cabbage, and the rice noodles. The owner was very kind and patient with my large party of 11, and the value for the money was outstanding. My kids remarked that the meal was better than Din Tai Fung that we had in Taipei a couple evenings before. We will be here again during our stay at Sun Moon Lake. They are closed on Thursdays.
A small and unassuming shop tucked away along the street beside the tourist bus station. An elderly lady beckoning at us to try their food and I'm glad we did. This little dainty shop is helmed by a very friendly and hospitable lady who recommended some of their local delights to us. We had a tana omelette 刺葱烘蛋 Ci4 Cong1 Hong1 Dan4 (tana is a spice of the aboriginals) which tasted savory with a slight tinge of ginger-like flavor to it. We also had Stir-fried cabbage (gao1 li4 cai4) which tasted fresh and sweet. It was drenched in savory gravy that added depth to the simple yet delicious dish. For our meat option, we had Diced Gongbao Chicken that was seasoned really well with dried chill and soy sauce. My only gripe with this dish is that it would've been a better experience had boneless chickens been used. Nonetheless, for our dinner at Sun moon lake, this place is highly recommended for international travellers who are seeking an affordable yet homely Taiwanese restaurant with authentic local cuisines. They also have an English digital Menu via scanning of QR code as well.
