great
Oh. My. God. How could I have lived in Chiayi for so many years and never eaten at this place? It boggles my mind. My knowledge of oysters being cultivated in this area is only recent, so that might be a reason. Anyways, this restaurant is, in some ways, like so many others that dot along the main drag... For 200 NT, you get all you can eat oysters. You go to the fridge and grab your rather large box of live oysters. Somebody comes along and gives you a bucket of burning charcoal which fits conveniently into the middle of your table, into a tidy sort of BBQ fixture. There is a huge variety of sashimi, fried noodles, fried rice, meat dishes, vegetable dishes that you can order off of the menu at an additional and reasonable price. Beer is available at 70 NT per bottle, which I think is vital since eating seafood without beer is like eating peanut butter without jelly. Anyways, you then proceed to barbecue your oysters, with a delightful variety of dipping sauces at your disposal. I am a wasabi girl myself, so I can and did heap as much as I like into my soy sauce until my eyes ran for days. It was utterly glorious. Please do ensure that you cook your oysters until they "pop". Failing to do so might result in Montezuma's revenge. Oh, and I almost forgot. What sets this place apart from all of the others? The amazing view. It's quite cool to sit outside on the second floor, overlooking the water, and then a boat comes in, heavily laden with oysters. Eventually, the huge basket of oysters is attached to a pully, and then brought up to the second floor, ready for your consumption. I cannot recommend this place enough. A true pinnacle of not only Taiwan, but especially Chiayi culture.
