More Comments at Google MapThis place slaps. Found it by accident when a few of the places I wanted to visit were closed, and this was a happy accident. Its a real local spot and reading the reviews I'm surprised we were allowed in as it seems they aren't too welcoming to foreigners, but to be honest- I don't care. They can have their own spot for their own folk if that's the way they want it. The staff didn't seem to want us there and made no eye contact the whole time we were in the bar which was amusing, but I honestly couldn't care less as the vibe was great. They seemed to warm to us by the end, and they did let us in at least. Although this is a proper rock n roll dive bar I'd say it's one of the best meals I've had in Tokyo, partially for the food, mostly for the vibe. The chef was wearing a bandana and a Harley Davidson shirt, and was chain smoking the whole time he cooked. Anywhere else in the world that would probably have me walking out the door, but for some reason it just felt right here. The menu is thorough, and I love that they not only describe what all the food is but also star their favourites. The food felt deeply authentic whilst being the sort of cooking that would have London food critics banding about superlatives. The fried chicken was banging- moist fleshed and crispy- as was the mushrooms and asparagus wrapped in bacon. I rarely get excited about rice but the fried rice was beautifully oily and crunchy with fresh vegetables. Everyone in the place is Japanese, the service is brusque, there is tank girl-esque art in the bathroom and smoke everywhere but if you don't take life and yourself too seriously you'll have a great night here. Go go go.
Incredible top rate atmosphere! You will step into a Izakaya den adorned proudly with the personal affects of a badass head chef who has lived a Rock’n’roll life. The menu is extensive (English readily available) and includes many thoughtfully selected recommendations that will make your decision making fun and easy (the kara age, tuna carpaccio and sashimi mix are must try’s). The staff are consummate professionals and the passion and energy they put into their work will be on full display throughout your evening. Dai Sui En gets bonus points for freezing their beer glasses prior to serving so you’re guaranteed a refreshing cold draft every time. You will sit shoulder to shoulder with locals who pump the atmosphere full with laughter, energy and nicotine to the tune of classic American Rock’n’roll. This place is a gem and can be summed up in one word - passion. Be a gracious guest. Eat, drink and be merry. Spark up a chat with the people next to you and show your appreciation to the hardworking hosts. 6/5 all round. Kanpai!
Don’t be discouraged by existing 4.0 stars awarded to Dai Sui En. This is an absolute S-tier establishment, worthy of 6/5 stars. As a foreigner, this izakaya offers an authentic experience, made japan-beginner-friendly with an English menu. Patrons are an even mix of local regulars and tourists. The staff are affable yet professional. The food can only be described as a culinary delight, to be paired with a great variety of local beers. Most of all, the atmosphere is that of a traditional izakaya. This restaurant is guaranteed good time!
