Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan｜かりーごや

かりーごや is my wife's favourite restaurant in Hokkaido. She has been going here for years and now I know why. The soup curry is light but full of flavour. I've always found it remarkable how they produce an amazing product consistently. What I love about かりーごや is the balance between the spice and flavour, a rarity in Japan.

This Bangladeshi curry with a Japanese twist (or should it be the other way around?) is a fantastic perk me up after braving the cold at the horse ranch just up the mountain. They serve Japanese short grained rice along with the curries but it was put together beautifully. A refreshing change from the thick japanese curry we’ve been used to. The restaurant is run by a Bangladeshi chef who explained the menu in English and a friendly Japanese Maitre D. We were warmly welcomed into their cozy restaurant even though we pushed our luck by arriving 20 minutes before the official opening time. It was very much appreciated!

This is for connoisseurs who want to enjoy spices. I think you can feel the depth of the spice especially with the roux type. In addition, the flavors of the ingredients live up to the curry, and you can enjoy the flavors of the vegetables and meat.
