A few hundred steps from the lobby of the Grand HiLai is this friendly breakfast spot. There's a wide selection of both northern- and southern-style breakfast dishes, some with a slightly unusual twist like taro mantou and brown sugar mantou. A specialty that most customers seem to line up for is the handmade fried dumplings, with a slightly unusual taste I can't place. Scallion pancakes, turnip cake, and breakfast hamburger were all very good. Rice milk, served in bowls, was warm and flavorful with only a hint of sweetness. Very friendly staff treated visiting foreigners like celebrities. No English, but basic Mandarin or even pointing will get you by, and the server will bring a pocket calculator to tally the total. It was annoying to go to Heungryunggeo, so I searched for a restaurant near the hotel and found it. The first and second menus on the menu are fried dumplings and danbbing. Buy two and pay 40NT. I usually eat it with milk tea added here. (May '23)
