East District, Hsinchu City｜漢城館

This is Korean restaurant run by 2nd generation Korean who grew up in Taiwan. You can speak Mandarin, Korean and English to the young boss. The food is definitely authentic and quite good. You can see by the Korean who have eaten at this establishment, the reviews are quite positive and consistent that it is quite authentic. As in all Korean restaurants, certain foods they will excel better than others. That is why in Korea, there are so many restaurants that seem to serve the same food but they are known for their specialties so try their extensive menu. Try different things and lock down on what you like because what one person likes others will not. When you travel in Korea, the same dish taste different in different restaurants and regions so you need to adjust your expectation as well as what is avail locally in Taiwan. Some on the review complains about the side dishes being bland. It is because in general, it is suppose to be eaten with the entrees to enhance the main dishes. In Korea, they may add seasonal items or things that they are good at making as side dish to promote their skill in making certain dishes. It especially goes well with Korean beer as Anju (side dishes for drinking). Of course you can eat the side dishes by itself but you should be respectful and not abuse it by eating all the free side dishes before main dishes arrives. Also you can order some drinks in advance and/or order several dishes per person to let restaurant know that you understand that side dishes are not free to the restaurant. You can always take the main dishes home if you don't finish. Their BBQ is generally good but when I am not in the mood for BBQ or as part of BBQ I order the following things: Dolsot Bibimbap, their bulgogi (prepared in back instead of at table), their octopus dishes, their cold noodles, their Kimchi pancakes, their spicy kimchi pork with tofu (really good and one of my fav), Kimchi soup (again a fav of mine). Again try different things and see what matches to your taste but the above are things that I have ordered. Also order more than one dish. Korean food has a way of tasting even better when it is mixed with other dishes. I haven't had opportunity to order the other things but the items I listed are quite authentic and good. I gave 5 out of 5 on this review because it is authentic, reasonable, and considering we are in Taiwan not Korea, it is quite good. This restaurant reminds me of good local small restaurants that line the streets in the back streets off the main road in Seoul. When I am in the mood for Korean in Hsinchu this is my first preference. Korean travelling in Taiwan.
