Kaiyotei from the Pontocho era appears in the 1956 color film "Night River" set in Kyoto in 1955, starring Fujiko Yamamoto, one of the most beautiful actresses in Japanese cinema. After watching the movie, it became my dream store. That shop is now located here on the corner of Miyagawa-cho. I heard that there was originally a shop under the stone steps of Yasaka Shrine, but when I looked at some old photos hanging on the stairs of this shop, I realized that it was located opposite the current Yoshimoto Kyoto Kagetsu. I learned that Also, for the first time in the photo, I learned that the first head chef was a disciple of His Majesty the Emperor's cook. It was founded in 1915, the 4th year of the Taisho era, and I believe it is a pioneer of Western food not only in Kyoto but also in Japan. The sweet-salty, thick sauce was apparently devised around that time as a way to prevent spills when delivering lunch boxes to maikos in Gion. So, I heard that teriyaki sauce originated here at Kaiyotei. I don't know how much of it is the same as it was back then, but it was a special experience to be able to enjoy Kyoto's Western bento at this restaurant. It was so delicious that I ordered a bottle of beer and had a blissful lunch. I got excited when a three-tiered red box was brought to me. The first tier is Mexican salad, the second tier is bite-sized fries and beef tenderloin that are easy for maikos to eat, and of course plenty of the same sauce. The third tier is rice. I think even men will be satisfied. There is a counter and kitchen on the first floor. The second floor is a large hall with table seats. Don't miss the old photos on the stairs. The typical Kyoto townscape of Miyagawa-cho is right next door. After your meal, you can enjoy a walk around Miyagawa Town. This is a recommended shop. A must if you like Western food I think this is a store you should definitely stop by if you come to Kyoto.

A historical Western restaurant. We had an assortment of appetizers, soup, and beef stew for dinner. Established 100 years ago, we are grateful for the taste passed down by the 5th generation owner. You need to choose a menu at the reservation stage, but they will prepare the best for you. Great for a family dinner at an affordable price!

Visited while traveling. Stayed at a hotel near Kiyomizu Temple. I was able to make a reservation even though I couldn't get a reservation at any of the nearby restaurants. A relaxing homely atmosphere. Reasonable price. Friendly customer service. The taste was also very delicious. Thank you for the meal. And finally, thanks so much. It became one of the good memories of my trip to Kyoto 💓
