Kyoto, Japan｜Kuradai Miso

A store specializing in selling dozens of types of miso from all over Japan! The staff was incredibly welcoming and allowed us to sample many types of miso before we decided on a few to purchase. Overall a really fun experience that we're glad we stumbled upon.

A shop that captures the otherworldly obsessions in Japanese culture. Perhaps 50 types of miso, hypnotically displayed and arrayed like bountiful gelato. Amazing.

A miso speciality store with over 30 kinds on offer. They recommended me some white miso when I asked them for one that would suit Kyoto. They also do tastings on request (as of last summer) so it’s nice to try a few and pick out your favorite. The name of each miso is also spelled out in letters alongside the Japanese label, but it’s frankly difficult to grasp which one is from where and what’s special about it. The staff will happily explain the background of any kind, but so far I’ve only spoken to them in Japanese so it may vary if you ask them in English.
