More Comments at Google MapA wonderful cultural experience with sublime aburi-mochi. The cafe first opened in 1656 and I felt its history as I looked at the elegant interior. Every nook and cranny was full-on photogenic old Japan. I sat next to the lovely garden. The mochi was amazing - such a blend of different flavours. I loved the grilled, crunchy bits. The service was excellent. A must-visit.
Tasty mochi skewers grilled over open embers. The miso tare and kinako combo glaze they use is awesome. 11 or so skewers combined with a solid pot of tea, and reasonably priced at ¥600 means you can enjoy a nice break between temples for cheap.
After going to other overpriced ‘modern’ tea houses in the Kyoto region, I think fondly of Kazariya. I heard this is the ‘original’, and the decor certainly feels like it’s been around for over a hundred years. Cash-only at 600 yen per person, they serve these wonderfully sweet, freshly charcoal grilled mochi on sticks. Tea comes with the set, and you get to sit under a covered porch and watch people leave the shrine. It feels like you’ve been transported back to the 19th century. Definitely come here and to the shrine next door. Oh, and there’s a competitor across the street. They’re both the same price, so just go to the one with the best seats. I saw some folks finish their snacks and then go to the other for a second round!
