Kyoto, Japan｜Tempura Matsu

Definitely a must go. Do not believe all of the reviews related to discriminatory treatment towards foreigners. This does not exist. The place is exceptional to say the least, warm, charming and full of family and staff that has one goal, serve and share their creations. The food is so fresh that the delivery man delivers fish that is alive. We saw that. The plates kept on coming, one good one after the other. Of the many that we have offered, all were good but two left and would leave a long lasting impression, the first was the urchin rice topped with tuna and the other was shrimp soup. You can’t imagine the refined cooking style and attention to details while preparing those in front of you. That evening was just amazing with all of the staff running to provide plates that were cooked to the point and immediately placed on ones table. This was and will remain one of the best meals we had. Thanks tempura Matsu and thanks Kyoto

I think the best dining experience we have ever had. Sitting at the bench talking to Toshio (chef) and his family who own/run the restaurant was incredible. The degustation is all amazing - tempura prawn/fish/vegetable, various sashimi, BBQ eel, ice bowl Japanese noodles and plenty more. It’s not just the high quality food but the unique cooking, the beautiful setting, such a rare treat and experience. Highly recommend reading ‘Rice Noodle Fish’ by Anthony Bourdain which has an extensive feature on this restaurant (he absolutely loved it). It’s also extremely good value for a restaurant of the highest quality. It’s small so bookings can be tricky and required in advance but so worth it!!

One of my fav and best dining experiences in Kyoto..every dish is mouth watering and it's just so homey and cozy and welcoming hospitality. So so so good. Must go here and probably will have a beautiful view of the river if you make it there during the day or just as the sun sets! From the second floor private room!
