Kyoto, Japan｜Gion Tao-tei

Their sign says “Take a break in Gion” and they mean exactly that. When you enter the stone, open air courtyard, you slip off your shoes before walking into the traditional Japanese bar and cafe. You are welcomed in warmly and, once you turn the corner, you then see the most intimate and peaceful bar seating right next to a gorgeous Japanese garden just outside the window. If you like Japanese spirits like sake and the best whisky in the world, you’ll be in luck. The inexpensive dried fruits and little bites to accompany your drinks are excellent, too. My wife and I quite enjoyed our evening drink at this peaceful retreat right before the best dinner of our lives right around the corner at Fukuyama. Step in, slip your shoes off, and, as they promise on the sign, take a break in Gion.

A new place (in an old house) with a good range of drinks and snacks, right in the heart of Gion. It's really accessible and reasonably priced.

Had a great meal in a beautifully decorated private room. Our generous host also gave us a postcard and free umbrella as it was raining when we left. Would recommend!
