Gengorou is a fantastic Michelin-listed traditional Japanese soba restaurant. A little out of the way from the usual tourist trail, if you are in the area, it is well worth the effort to get there. The fresh, hand-made soba is simply divine, and you can order it with a range of sides, including tempura, mountain vegetables and more. If you love soba, don't forget to order the large noodles, which gives you more noodles for an extra fee. Other favourites include the soba tofu and the sour plum. The restaurant was recently refurbished and the parking lot extended. It still does get very busy during lunch on the weekends, so you may want to time your visit to avoid the peak rush.

Sometimes I want to eat soba here. It's a popular restaurant, so I recommend you avoid visiting during lunchtime. The soba noodles are chewy and delicious, and the bonito goes well with the strong soup. As expected from a Michelin restaurant. The companion of soba is always tempura bowl. The crunchy batter, large shrimp, and thick soup stock make it addictive.

I had the most popular soba gozen, and my husband had the tempura bowl and soba noodles. For soba, you can choose between sieve and kake. The soba noodles were thin, but very chewy, plentiful, and very filling. The soba rice was slightly salty, and the soba tofu was heavier than I expected, but it was very delicious. Soba yokan has a nice texture and is not too sweet. When I looked at the photo on the menu, it didn't look like there was a lot of food, but when I ate it, I was full. The bowl of tempura bowl that my husband ate was filled to the brim, and it was as filling as it looked, and he seemed to be full. I was full, but I had ordered ohagi for dessert, so I had a good portion of that as well. The buckwheat noodles were aromatic and very delicious.
