Gujo, Gifu, Japan｜Uotora

Delicious grilled eel rice. Very satisfying. The dining environment is very comfortable and relaxing with nice soft piped music. The other must try dish is the grilled eel liver. It's served together with a quail egg yolk. Rich in flavor with a hint of charred taste.

This restaurant specialises in grilled eel dishes, it gets very busy at lunchtimes especially close to the Guju-odori festival when tourist numbers increase. In the evenings it was somewhat quieter as a lot of day trippers return home and the town gets very quiet. I had probably the best hitsumabushi I've had in Japan here. The eel was expertly cooked, and I suspect wild rather than farmed as it's not too fatty and has a nice crispness. Almost worth the trip to Gujo Hachiman in itself.

Best Unagi ever. If you are in Gujo, do try it. Was here on a Wednesday and most of the shops here were closed, including Uotora so do note.
