Sakura-ya is a sophisticated yet understated restaurant that specializes in the delicacy that is freshwater eels. Located in the vibrant downtown area, it is a vital thread in the fabric of this district. The ambiance is charmingly classical and spotless. It can be a bit of a walk from the station, though far from impossible. Come here for a satisfying meal after visiting nearby Matsumoto Castle, before exploring nearby cafes. While they have quality offerings like tempura, their kabayaki-unagi set (unagi teishoku) is the logical choice. Their unagi comes lightly brushed in sauce glaze to appeal to diners with subtler palates. A bottle of たれ sits on the table for those who prefer theirs with thicker flavor. A small bowl of sansho powder is also provided to give the dish a transcendent zing. While unagi is traditionally consumed in the summer, it is a dish that can be appreciated throughout the seasons, and Sakura-ya is one such place to partake.

Very calm atmosphere. Food was delicious but wasn't wow. The pepper that you can sprinkle on top of the eel was very interesting. It numb your lips and tongues. Very interesting way to enjoy food.

A long-established eel restaurant that has been running for 108 years. Enjoy the upper eel bowl! ! The spiciness of the sauce, the fluffiness of the eel, and the rice were all delicious! There is also a banquet hall on the second floor, so I want to come at night next time!
