Omihachiman, Shiga, Japan｜Eel Hitsumabushi Sumiyagura

Strolling around town in an heavy rain night, looking for a place for dinner, finally ended up in this restaurant. The best unagi meal we had during our 2022 Japan trip! Resembled our 2019 Japan trip which we ate a very good unagi meal in Chiba.

We saw an advertisement banner for the shop at the train station and spent about 20 mins walking over. The shop was clean and food was served in a timely manner. We got seats by the window which was nice as the sunlight shining in on a winter day was nice. We order a hitsumabushi unagi bowl, ten-don, beef bowl and some sides. The unagi was really yummy and the tendon and beef bowl ensured that customers who did not feel like eating unagi that day have other options (it was yummy too). Another small highlight perhaps, was the tofu sashimi which was really fragrant. Prices are reasonable and staff are attentive. English menus are available. Will return if I am in the area!

One of the best unagi we’ve had in japan so far, up on top with one of our other absolute favourite in narita. They gave us extra sauce to pour as we like which is always appreciated. Unagi was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Hitsumabushi was also delicious, the soup is the best I’ve had with this dish so far👍
