Nikko, Tochigi, Japan｜Santenamataro

The best river views and the best yuba rice bowl and udon I’ve tasted in Nikko! Their Yuba is somewhat sweet and the udon’s yuba, had this distinct yet amazing taste that looked like wasabi on top but actually it was Sanshou (Japanese pepper) it’s not spicy but it complemented the whole eating experience. The service was great, the ambiance, breathtaking!!! And considering it only costed less than 1000¥ per meal for this. What a true hidden gem this restaurant is!

Dropped by for lunch after visiting the nearby Toshogu Shrine. The little diner is set by the river and has a very scenic view. There were 2-3 other customers who were having a drink. The owner who is also the chef was very friendly. The yuba udon and rice dishes he prepared was delicious. Will definitely recommend the place - good for a quiet lunch or simply have a coffee or matcha break when exploring Nikko.

The food and service at this spot was amazing and was one of the top highlights of my Japan trip. Other than the stunning view of the river and trees, the shop owner provided prompt service. The yuba udon was perfectly seasoned and hit the spot after a day of sightseeing. Highly recommend!
