Otawara, Tochigi, Japan｜Tonkun

Great little place snuck away from the main street. A very quiet and quintessential Japanese atmosphere. Delicious tonkatsu options. Free rice and green tea refills. Would recommend to anyone travelling near the area.

Best tonkatsu we have had in Japan along with an order of Bashi that was super good too. Loved the environment of sitting on the floor and eating at long tables. They don't have an English menu but if you have google translate it's pretty easy to figure out. Getting the main dish took a little while but it as busy and SO WORTH THE WAIT. The server helped us and showed us what sauces to put on what and communicated with us the best she could despite our very small knowledge of Japanese. We will 100% be visiting again.

I visited around 11:50, and it was already almost full, so I managed to get 2 seats after the customers at the counter crowded in. I ordered the loin cutlet set meal and fillet cutlet set meal. It was crowded so we had to wait a bit, but it was worth the wait. Both the loin and fillet were tender and delicious. By chance, a seminar was being held nearby, so I was looking for a restaurant with a good reputation in the area, and I came across it, and it turned out to be the right choice.
