Meguro City, Tokyo, Japan｜Unagi Funaichi

Was a little confused at first since I couldn't read. When we went, it was cash only. 2nd floor is a small dining area. We ordered the 6500 yen meal and it was delicious! Came with tea, small salad, soup, and a box of eel and rice.

You wouldn't notice this tiny building if you walked by from the street. There are only a few seats and the atmosphere is very basic. The shop is very old, and so is the grandmother who is serving you. Apparently they've been here for more than 40 years, at a time before building replaced the rice fields in Meguro area. The food is good and there are only a few dishes on the menu, a single menu all day long, which makes it a bit pricey if you want to go for lunch. For dinner, try to go early, because your host needs to go to bed and will close the shop at 8pm, with the last order at 7:30pm. That was a great experience, an authentic taste that has lived for decades.

This is my spot to go for eel rice. It's a tiny restaurant with only 8 seats. The eel is so tender that it melts in my mouth right away. The sauce soaked rice is so tasty. I've had eel rice in many other restaurants including a famous one in Kagosgima, Kyusyu, and an expensive one in Mafujyuban, but this tiny shop is still my favorite!
