While Unagi Yanagi may be slightly off the beaten path in a predominantly residential area of Edogawa, it’s well worth the effort to seek out this charming long-standing restaurant. The proprietress speaks very limited English, and the menu is only in Japanese, but all one really needs to know is that grilled unagi is the speciality here. For diners who don’t prefer eel, the tempura set meal featuring fish and seasonal vegetables is also a delicious hit. Service is very friendly and attentive and the decor is quaintly rustic. Mind the restaurant’s irregular hours of operation, or call in advance to verify that they are open for business. A few minutes walk from Koiwa Station on the Chuo-Sobu Line, Unagi Yanagi is one of Edogawa’s local gems.
