Yamanochi, Nagano, Japan｜Sushi Ya

It doesn't open until six o'clock, so you can't go in if you go early. The proprietress of the nearby hotel "Tawaya" was very enthusiastic and helped us contact the sushi restaurant chef to arrange a seat. The seafood used in this sushi is very fresh. As a foreigner who often eats sushi, I have a new understanding of Japanese sushi in the mountains! marvelous!

Pretty cozy space, and I walked in a bit before 5:30 pm. The chef speaks a bit of english and was running the show till another employee showed up. They gave me an english menu and I chose the 10 pieces chef's choice and then the soup. It was honestly one of the best sushi I had in Japan. Thigns were fresh, and he gave a very nice variety. The soup is made with shrimp head, and so is ultra flavorful! Also ordered an uni and another scallop cause it was so good. Had a great time chatting up other folks in the restaurant as well. Everything in total was 5900 yen, and they take credit card. Would definitely recommend!!

Best food we had on our Japan trip. A small place run by one single chef. The chef is extremely experienced and skillful, his food is definitely Michelins level. Most importantly made with a lot of passion and love. Must try the miso soup - best ever you won’t regret it.
