Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan｜Oga Sushi

Found this place via Google map, do not have any expectation before going. It is a small cosy sushi restaurant serving the neighbourhood, inside there is a sushi bar and some tatami kinds of seating. The owners cannot speak any English but they are very friendly and we felt welcomed although we don't understand each other. All the other customers are local and basically friend to the owners, so the overall atmosphere is very relaxed and comfortable. The food is good and the price is very reasonable. We had both sushi and sashimi. The ingredients are fresh and taste good. Other customers recommended the grilled eel sushi to us and it tasted really delicious. As a foreigner, if you are able to speak some Japanese, and have more interaction with the owners and other customers, I think the experience will be even better.

Sushi in Hokkaido is generally considered very fresh, even by Japanese standards, and Oga sushi is no exception. The nigiri-zushi was just the right temperature, with the fluffly rice delicately seasoned to have just a hint of sushi vinegar. All fish toppings were delicious -- I usually don't like amaebi but they were large and sweet here with none of the fishy taste. The Hamachi was also incredible, and the master was both friendly and accommodating. Open for lunch until 1pm, but it's mainly a dinner business.
