Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan｜Yanase

Yanase is the best Tonkatsu place we've been to in our 9 months of living in Japan (Yokohama). There's traditional Japanese seating (on the tatami floor), the full set menu (we had fried pork fillets for ¥1600 or fried pork roast for ¥1400), they help teach you how to mix your own tonkatsu sauce starting with grinding up the sesame seeds, and the owners were so friendly and hospitable despite the language barrier! If you're looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience with gracious hosts, look no further. 10/10 would come again!

Wonderful tonkatsu, lovely service, and warm friendly atmosphere - highly recommend this restaurant!! We have lived in Japan for 1 year, we have tried lots of tonkatsu and this is by far the best we have ever had. The owners were so friendly and kind to us, even though we don’t speak any Japanese. The restaurant is clean and very traditionally styled, with options to sit at the bar or on traditional tatami mats and low tables. We had the potato croquette to start, and three orders of pork fillet and one order of pork roast tonkatsu, for four people. The food was cooked fresh and prepared perfectly. And a fun bonus to get to grind your own sesame seeds for the tonkatsu sauce! And the mustard - yes the mustard - is so yummy!! Such a fun, fabulous place. We wish we lived closer and we cannot wait time return.
