I was intrigued. I had never seen tonkatsu prepared in this way before. A note from the chef answered the mystery. It was a heartfelt message about returning to "normal" food amidst the sea of mass-produced, additive-ridden foods we eat a lot these days. Gensui's concept is simple - wholesome, safe, and healthy food. It doesn't have to bear a fancy label as long as it brings nourishment. The vegetables, grown organically by Mr Kanichi Saito using just soil and micro-organisms, also support this philosophy. The sustainable agriculture methods focusing on improving soil health reminded me of practices used by many WA wineries ☺️🍷 The shift towards caring about our environment for a healthier ecosystem is genuinely inspiring. And then there was the tonkatsu — so delicious!! うまっ ♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪ Tender to the point of needing no knife to cut it 😆🫣. Louie treated us to extra servings from different parts of the pig. The result? A feast of tonkatsu that was light, crunchy, delicious, and very satisfying. Thank you, Chef, for the fantastic meal and the perspective on food. I am humbled and grateful 😊

Best Katsu I’ve ever had. I’ve been here almost every week while living here. The store has a wonderful atmosphere (although Beatles Strawberry fields on repeat gets old after a while) and feels very welcoming. The shops sustainable concept is also very nice. The service is very attentive, the timing of the dishes is perfect and the tea is always filled up immediately. The rice is also extremely delicious and fresh, cooked in small portions in a clay pot (土鍋). Please check this place out and be prepared to have the best katsu of your life.

The best tonkatsu I have ever had. The shop is clean and has a smooth minimalistic design. You can see the staff hard at work in the kitchen at the side. The food was quick to come and tasty. A calm and pleasant atmosphere, always a wonderful eating experience. The set comes with your tonkatsu cut of choice (1, 2, or all 3 options), rice, shredded cabbage, pickled vegetables, and miso soup. The miso soup is dark and has a strong deep taste which is not my favourite but still very enjoyable. Extra cabbage and rice can be requested for 50¥. ごちそうさまでした❗
