You can't beat Gyoza no Ohsho for a budget-friendly, no frills lunch or dinner in Kyoto for Japanese-style Chinese food, especially if you are traveling with children. Ramen, gyoza, and fried rice are always good here. My favorite is their Mabo Tofu. Their half-size (Just Size) portions are great, if you can't decide what you want and you can order 3-4 small dishes. They always have some kind of coupon deal going on for future visits as well. There are numerous branches in Kyoto and each branch has at least one special menu item that you can only get at that branch.
