Singapore｜Kim Choo Kueh Chang (Katong)

A must buy whenever I’m around that area. The shop is very peranakan-ly done up. They sell a wide variety of traditional Nyonya Kuehs, Nyonya bak zhang(Dumplings), cookies and biscuits. They have mini Nyonya bak zhang too. I love the Nyonya and Salty ones!! Mini ones at $1.50, regular ones at $4.50. Fillings gao gao. Support local, you can even use Kris+, by Singapore airlines to make payment 😂

Was gifted this by a friend and when I know it’s from Kim Choo, you enjoy every moment because you know there’s a bit of heritage, history, heirloom you are experiencing. The glutinous rice layer breaks apart softly to reveal the filling with anticipation. One mouthful and you experience an alternating taste of sweet and savoury of the chinese five spice powder and lean pork. There will be newer flavours; more exotic proteins; colours - and yes that should be the way. But I take comfort that there is a homely version we can all return to. ‘Kim’ me the zhang cos I ‘Choo’ the original anytime.

Quick market shop version of their nearby main Kim Choo Kueh Chang location. Lots of items for enjoying at home as well as fresh takeaway dumplings and kueh in many varieties, so there are plenty to try. The delicate texture and flavors of kueh here are really nice. Efficient service to keep the queue jumping.
